A small group has been meeting since Autumn 2021 to explore the potential for developing a regional carbon offsetting scheme that would enable local businesses and organisations to purchase carbon offsets from a ‘fund’ that would then be used to finance energy efficiency schemes in community buildings and/or community energy schemes.
The group is made up of community building energy efficiency consultants, social investors, the North of Tyne Combined Authority (NoTCA), the North East LEP Energy/Net Zero Hub and North East and Yorkshire Energy/Net Zero Hub and Stephen Prior of Forest Carbon who developed the Forest Carbon Code and the Peat Carbon Code in the UK. We have identified research and development work that will need to be undertaken to progress this idea and will continue to test the appetite for funding to begin Research and Development work leading to a regional pilot.
