NEECCo Business Network

NEECCo is launching the NEECCo Business Network in continued ambition to become ‘England’s greenest region’

We’re calling upon all North East businesses to sign up to support the ambition of NEECCo, join the NEECCo Business Network and pledge to take action to address the climate emergency.

What is the NEECCo Business Network?

The ambition of the NEECCo Business Network is to build a network of businesses across sectors and scales from our largest corporates, small and medium sized enterprises through to micro businesses and start-ups. The aims of the network are to:

  • Supporting businesses with reducing their carbon emissions and their transition to Net Zero and creating a single, unified vehicle to engage NE businesses in addressing the climate emergency.
  • Ignite and accelerate action to address the climate emergency, support nature and ensure a just transition to a low carbon economy within all businesses as well as supporting organisations with business adaptation and mitigation measures;
  • Raise awareness of the benefits of embedding environmental sustainability within organisations and future market opportunities
  • Celebrate and showcase the climate actions businesses are already undertaking
  • Support all businesses, wherever they are in their climate action/net zero journey
  • Provide access to tools, resources, expertise and encourage mutual support to increase the aspirations and capabilities of businesses to respond to the climate emergency.

Why should my business get involved?

Businesses that are taking proactive action to tackle the climate emergency and drive environmental sustainability within their businesses have an opportunity to future-proof their business, reduce costs and save resources in the long-term, and create competitive advantage to attract more customers and contracts.  The NEECCo Business Network wants to ensure that that our regional businesses can be at the forefront of and continue to thrive in a low-carbon economy by encouraging and supporting businesses to accelerate their journeys to Net Zero.

By joining the NEECCo Business Network you will be asked to make an organisational pledge to further NEECCo’s ambition for the North East to ‘Become England’s Greenest Region’ and become part of a network providing mutual support and encouragement to go further and faster to benefit the region, our place and the future of the regional economy.

We appreciate that many businesses are at the very start of their journey to Net Zero and the Business Network wants to support you to take those first steps.  Others are further ahead and wish to share their experience and knowledge with others.

As a NEECCo Business Network member you will be able to attend a range of NEECCo and partner events to gain knowledge, skills and understanding to enable you to take action as well opportunities to learn from and share with other businesses.  Over time the NEECCo Business Network plans to develop a broader programme of support and access to tools and resources to accelerate and support the sustainability work of regional businesses.

Through the wider NEECCo network and communications channels you’ll be able to promote your support for NEECCo and have opportunities to share what you are doing with others to drive awareness of your business and your sustainability work.

Who else is involved?

The NEECCo Business Network is backed by NEECCo strategic partners – the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), the North East Chamber of Commerce, and the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), alongside many other business network and engagement organisations including Construction Excellence North East (CENE), Business in the Community, Dynamo, the Entrepreneurs Forum, SME Centre of Excellence, Asian Business Connexions, NEPO, Tees Valley Business Club and the Newcastle Gateshead Initiative.  This wide group of partners to the NEECCo Business Network are uniting their efforts to support the North East business community to reduce carbon emissions and widen environmental management and sustainability.

Collectively we have a target to secure 1,000 NEECCo Business Network members by the end of 2022.

Become an SME Ambassador

According to the latest BEIS data 24% of business sector in the North East consists of SME and micro-businesses, with a further 75% of businesses in the region being sole traders. Only 1% of North East businesses (230 in total) have over 250 employees. We want to recruit a number of NEECCo SME Ambassadors across a variety of business sectors and geographies to work with the NEECCo Business Network steering group to shape the programme of support for local businesses and to act as NEECCo Ambassadors to other SMEs within their sector/ geography.

The recruitment process for SME Ambassadors will be launched in Spring 2022 so sign up to join the NEECCo Business Network so you will receive further information when this opportunity goes live.

Become a NEECCo Corporate Partner or Associate Corporate Partner

In order to secure the future sustainability and deliverability of NEECCo for the next three years, we need to secure a £200K per year budget to fund a small NEECCo team (a NEECCo Director, a Comms & Events Officer and a Project Support Officer) and organisational operating costs to drive forward the work of the Coalition.

We are seeking ongoing financial support from our strategic partners and have received contributions from the Integrated Care System and from Northern Powergrid.

We need to secure the support of a small number of key corporate partners across the region as NEECCo Corporate Partners or Associate Corporate Partners to:

  • convene a NEECCo Business Network steering group to help shape the support offer to the wider business sector along with business support/ membership/ network organisations including the NEECCo business network strategic partners (FSB, CBI, Chamber of Commerce) and other business network groups
  • act as business ambassadors for NEECCo – promoting the Coalition, the NEECCo Business Network and encouraging their networks, suppliers and customers to also get involved, to sign up as NEECCo supporters and NEECCo Business Network members
  • to contribute to the financial resource required to further develop and deliver the Coalition’s work.

Please contact Carol Botten, Executive Lead at NEECCo for a further discussion if you are interested in becoming a NEECCo Corporate Partner or Associate Corporate Partner.

And finally….

North East businesses have a key role to play alongside the public sector and voluntary and community sector to realise our vision of ‘Becoming England’s Greenest region’. To ensure the support of local, sub-regional and national Government and strategic bodies, we need to demonstrate a groundswell of ambition and joint commitment from the business sector. Working across sectors we can positively position the region for further investment and support.

The profile of the climate emergency is higher than ever with the UK hosting COP26 and there is a growing appetite from businesses in the North East to become part of a regional effort to tackle the climate crisis, and to future proof and enable businesses to benefit from the opportunities arising in a green, low-carbon economy.

NEECCo’s aims include agreeing ambitious targets to develop and deliver climate and environmental initiatives to tackle the climate emergency, reverse ecological collapse and deliver a just transition to a new green economy.  Reaching this goal can only be accomplished at scale, and through sectors and organisations working together, so everyone is asked to do their bit, however small.

Join NEECCo as a supporter today and register your interest in the NEECCo Business Network to be among the first to benefit from taster sessions, events and resources plus the opportunity to collaborate with us and help shape the future of the Network.
