In a stimulating lecture, Professor Neil S. Beattie will describe how Northumbria research and innovation is offering a new contribution to reducing carbon dioxide emissions with aesthetically integrated solar cells.

He will put this research in the context of a thriving ecosystem of activity in science, engineering and technology in the North East of England which, together with colleagues, Professor Beattie and his team have created over the last decade. During the lecture he will also present reflections on his experience of leadership to offer strategies for achieving net-zero emissions.

About the Speaker

Neil S. Beattie is Professor of Energy Innovation at Northumbria University and the Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Renewable Energy Northeast Universities (ReNU). Physics is the educational foundation of Professor Beattie’s career and he is fascinated by light, ultra-small materials, electricity and quantum mechanics.

Working in solar cell research at Northumbria University has allowed him to combine and explore these topics in detail. Before joining Northumbria University in 2009, he completed a PhD in Physics at the University of Cambridge. His work was sponsored by Toshiba and was in the field of semiconductor devices for quantum information. Following his PhD, Professor Beattie worked as an Innovation Consultant on behalf of several clients, including Shell, P&G, Rolls-Royce and Boeing.

In the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering, he led the creation of physics as a discipline at Northumbria University, including a complete portfolio of undergraduate degrees. He is now using his strategic research leadership and innovation skills to establish and lead Energy Futures – a diverse and inclusive community of academics across different disciplines at Northumbria University, with the common aim of decarbonisation through research impact.
